Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportationâs (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce a competitive opportunity to serve as a Senior Traffic Engineer in our Central Office Traffic Operations Division.
The selected candidate will support provide direct assistance to the Integrated Directional Signing Program (IDSP) Program Manager serving as the responsible charge engineer for program delivery. Provide oversight of engineering and project management initiatives to achieve traffic safety and operational efficiency, including monitoring performance of contractors. Assist program management in planning, organizing, directing, training, evaluating, and improving the IDSP. Assist in collaborations with division management to establish direction and develop statewide policies for the IDSP and VDOTâs Community Wayfinding Program.
Additional duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Strategic Program and Policy Support: Fulfill duties as responsible charge engineer in compliance with policies, procedures and the Code of Virginia as related to the IDSP and VDOTâs Community Wayfinding Program.
Program Management and Communication: Educate, influence, and promote the value of sign-related programs and policies. Represent VDOT on state, national, and international sign committees and organizations. Participate in the legislative process to promote consistency and uniformity in signing issues. Prepare correspondence and other documents for executive responses to citizen requests and concerns about signing programs. Collaborate with districts and regions to resolve signing issues. Respond to citizens and other stakeholders regarding sign policies, procedures, and practices. Lead and/or assist in development of educational and training programs.
Development of New Initiatives: Investigate and develop innovative programs for deployment. Coordinate with districts and local jurisdictions to promote understanding and proper application of new initiatives. Collaborate with Data Management to develop systems to collect, retain and disseminate statewide sign-related records, data, and information.
Signing Programs Management and Policies Evaluation: Identify ways to improve IDSP methods, means and techniques through best practices. Provide oversight of program fiscal activities to ensure accuracy of financial transactions and budgets and contract compliance. Assist in development and management of Travel Services Program contracts.
Minimum Qualifications
⢠Knowledge of traffic operations and engineering principles and practices.
⢠Ability to communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing, including presentations.
⢠Knowledge of procurement policies, procedures, and practices.
⢠Valid driver's license.
⢠Skill in researching complex technical subjects, applying findings to develop policies and procedures, and preparing narrative and statistical technical reports.
⢠Experience applying MUTCD, VDOT Road and Bridge standards and specifications.
⢠Skill in the use of computers and software applications including ArcGIS and MS Office.
⢠Experience applying laws, regulations, specifications, policies, and procedures related to directional signs and traffic control devices.
⢠Professional Engineer
Preferred Qualifications
⢠Bachelorâs degree in engineering or related field preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.
⢠Experience in traffic engineering with emphasis on traffic control devices.
