Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to become a frontline supervisor for the roadway maintenance crew at VDOTâs Dryden Area Headquarters as a Maintenance Supervisor.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:

Leadership â Assist the Area Superintendent in planning for the maintenance program, special projects, and personnel needs. Investigate and recommend solutions to operations and maintenance complaints. Estimate repair, construction and materials costs. Assist in ordering, storing and utilizing AHQ materials. Assist and advise crew on difficult and unusual problems when necessary.

Job Safety â Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.) and trains crew members on proper safety methods. Ensure equipment is used properly.

Equipment Operation â Operate equipment and perform a variety of moderate to highly skilled tasks in the maintenance of roadways.

Emergency Operations â Supervise emergency operations to ensure the safe operation of roadways. Support emergency operations including storm damage repairs, clearing roadways of snow, ice and debris, accident clean-up, and providing traffic control during and after normal working hours.

Records Preparation and Management â Assist in preparation and maintenance of program and project documentation. Assist the Area Superintendent and Residency Management in the preparation of budget reports, data, and records. Assist in forecasting additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies. Monitor expenditures. Recommend adjustments as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

⢠Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
⢠Considerable skill in operating and maintaining light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used in highway maintenance/construction.
⢠Ability to plan, schedule, assign, train, and evaluate the work of others.
⢠Ability to perform manual labor including frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and to use hand and power tools.
⢠Ability to read, interpret, and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.
⢠Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
⢠Ability to work inclement weather, accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
⢠Valid driverâs license.

Preferred Qualifications:

⢠Recent experience leading the work of and training others in highway maintenanceoperations and techniques.
⢠Experience leading emergency operations such as snow removal, storm damage andaccident clean up.
⢠Experience using computers to maintain inventory records, analyze data, and prepare schedules and reports.
⢠High School diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
