Adolfson & Peterson Construction, one of the nation’s top contractors, is recruiting for an experienced VP of Operations to join our Southwest Regional team based out of Tempe. The Vice President of Operations will provide strategic leadership for the region by managing internal operations and developing new opportunities in the marketplace. Work with the regional leadership team and other regions across the company to build collaboration and market strength. 

Key Accountabilities of the role include:

  1. Take personal responsibility for working safely within an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture.
    • Be a champion to support IIF efforts for working safely and building a culture of care and concern within the organization that reinforces the behavioral aspects of working and living safely.
    • Maintain a relationship with safety to hold responsibility for personal safety, the safety of each person in the company, and the IIF performance of the entire workforce.
    • As a leader, consistently communicate and reinforce the tenets of an IIF workplace. Be willing to discuss a personal commitment and desire for all team members to work safely and attain an IIF workplace.
    • As a leader, ensure that processes and procedures that support an IIF culture are maintained and reviewed for continuous improvement.
  1. Partner with the regional leadership team members to develop and implement strategy, develop business plans, and drive business unit results.
    • Engage, allocate, and assess performance of company resources.
    • Ensure projects are delivered to clients’ expectations within time and budget parameters.
    • Oversee and ensure operational integrity of all projects.
    • Ensure all jobs meet AP and client quality standards.
  2. Lead regional business operations in a holistic, balanced way to maximize performance and profitability.
    • Build and preserve operational excellence; implement operational best practices.
    • Act as a primary communications link to and from the General Superintendent, Project Executive, and Chief Estimator to ensure quality, timely communications occur within project teams.
    • Strategically plan staffing on every job; ensure training, development, and backup in all roles.
    • Establish project performance expectations; monitor and review project performance and resolve issues expeditiously.
  3. Collaborate with the regional leader to develop a regional market development plan and deliver corresponding results.
    • Build long-term and short-term strategies to achieve profitability and operational expectations.
    • Develop a network for active and quality client development.
    • Work with business development to create strategies to convert opportunities into new business.
    • Drive a client-focused approach focused on increasing value to assure client retention and improve capability to win work.
  4. Create and ensure operational efficiency and excellence.
    • Develop and drive operational processes and best practices across the region.
    • Ensure all jobs are profitable (no loss jobs).
    • Champion a culture of safety, quality, and compliance; set the tone and expectation for safety first and zero injury in all projects.
    • Assist the regional controller and regional leader in managing regional overhead to meet company expectations.
  5. Drive collaboration across the business and within the region.
    • Foster a culture of cooperation and resource sharing for project pursuit and delivery.
    • Build a collaborative culture and ensure teamwork between project stakeholders.
  6. Create and develop client relationships.
    • Provide personal leadership for delivering profitable projects.
    • Lead new business networking to enhance regional strength.
    • Leverage personal relationships within the local business community, including developers, architects, clients, prospective clients, and subcontractors.
  7. Drive business unit and project team effectiveness.
    • Partner with regional leadership team members to build a culture of excellence.
    • Identify and develop talent to sustain and strengthen the business.
    • Build morale and engagement through leadership actions.
    • Design operational team structure and manage individual and team performance to achieve regional results.

Requirements:

  1. History or progressively more responsible leadership experience and proven results including:
    • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, or related field and 12+ years of construction project management experience or a combination of relevant experience and education.
    • Advanced proficiency with scheduling, spreadsheets, cost control, and project management software including Prolog, Microsoft Project, P6, and other construction programs.
    • Demonstrated understanding of state of the art construction financing, concepts, and technologies.
    • Solid understanding of value engineering, life cycle costing, and project profit\/cost processes.
    • Ability to read and comprehend building plans and specifications; estimating experience including take-offs preferred.
    • Recognition and achievement of high quality construction standards.
    • Current or ability to become current with OSHA 30 and company safety requirements.
  2. Demonstrated integrity and ethical standards.
  3. Experience driving growth and change; demonstrated effectiveness in driving operations and executing plans.
  4. Ability to identify talent, create and develop teams, and build trust and engagement.
  5. Capability to identify and capitalize on opportunities quickly; ability to maintain effective balance between strategic and tactical priorities.
  6. Experience driving accountability for financial and operational effectiveness, integrating and aligning efforts across teams, monitoring results, and tackling problems decisively.
  7. Experience cultivating an active network of relationships, driving collaboration and alignment, relating well to key colleagues, and communicating candidly with team members at all levels.
  8. Ability to drive to the core of complex issues and provide insightful and constructive feedback.
  9. History of progressively more responsible leadership experience;
