CBG Surveying is seeking a skilled and motivated Survey Instrument Operator to join our growing team in the Greater Austin metropolitan area. This position plays a critical role in supporting field survey operations and ensuring the successful execution of client projects.
Working under the direction of the Survey Crew Chief, the Instrument Man will assist with field data collection, construction staking, boundary surveys, and other surveying activities using advanced survey equipment and technology.

Position Overview
The Survey Instrument Man is responsible for supporting field operations by setting up and operating survey instruments, collecting accurate field data, and assisting with construction staking and boundary surveys. This position requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and effectively in outdoor environments.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Survey Operations
- Set up and operate total stations to accurately collect survey data.
- Perform closed-loop traverses, data reduction, and trigonometric leveling.
- Execute COGO functions, including inverse, resection, line staking, and coordinate translation/rotation.
- Conduct map checks and calculate error of closure using Carlson SurvCE.
- Perform and maintain linework in the field.
- Learn and apply CBG Surveying field coding standards.
- Calibrate prism rods and ensure survey equipment accuracy.
Boundary & Construction Surveying
- Read and interpret subdivision plats, construction plans, and metes-and-bounds legal descriptions.
- Locate property corners using pin finders, plats, and legal descriptions.
- Assist with construction staking and other field survey activities.
Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance
- Maintain survey truck readiness and ensure all necessary tools and equipment are onboard daily.
- Carry and handle survey equipment, including instruments, stakes, hubs, lath, and related tools.
- Assist with clearing survey lines using hand tools and chainsaws when necessary.
Teamwork & Communication
- Follow instructions from the Survey Crew Chief and complete assigned tasks efficiently.
- Communicate professionally with team members, clients, contractors, and property owners.
- Support a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on safety, quality, and productivity.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 2 years of survey-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and team-oriented attitude.
Technical Knowledge
- Understanding of field survey methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of survey terminology and mathematical principles.
- Experience operating total stations, data collectors, and electronic survey equipment.
- Experience with Carlson SurvCE software preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, plats, and graphic instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong time management and problem-solving abilities.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
- Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying equipment, driving stakes, and clearing brush.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work in rugged terrain for extended periods.
- Fast-paced, team-oriented field environment.
