Job Description

Heavy Civil Project Manager Highway / Road / Bridge

This isn't a desk-jockey role where you shuffle paper and attend meetings that could've been emails. This is a seat with real weight you'll run heavy civil projects across Virginia and North Carolina for an established, self-perform contractor that actually builds what they sell. The backlog is real, the projects are challenging, and you'll own the P&L from day one. No hand-holding. No layers of bureaucracy. Just a strong team that delivers, and they're looking for another Project Manager who wants to grow with them.

You'll lead heavy highway, road, and bridge projects from planning through closeout working shoulder-to-shoulder with field leadership, project engineers, owners, agencies, subcontractors, and vendors. This is a builder's company: dirt, grading, utilities, bridges, storm drain, water and sewer, erosion control, and DOT roadway work all self-performed. You report directly to senior leadership. That's it.

You'll be accountable for:

  • Managing heavy highway, road, bridge, and civil infrastructure projects from plan through closeout
  • Owning the schedule, budget, cost control, forecasting, change orders, documentation, and closeout the whole picture
  • Protecting projected margins by submitting accurate, timely cost and income projections and acting on variances before they grow
  • Serving as the main project contact for owners, agencies, subcontractors, and vendors you're the face of the job
  • Leading field supervision and project engineering teams, setting clear roles and expectations so everyone knows what they own
  • Identifying project risks early and driving solutions before they become bigger problems
  • Protecting the company's position on contract changes, claims, documentation, and owner communication
  • Owning quality control reviewing designs against engineering principles and ensuring work meets spec

We're looking for career heavy civil PMs who've already run projects as a Project Manager and can manage profitability without constant oversight.

You have:

  • 510+ years of experience on heavy/highway/DOT roadway projects
  • Proven track record running projects as a PM budget, schedule, margin, the works
  • Strong understanding of self-perform work: dirt, grading, utilities, bridges, storm drain, water and sewer, erosion control
  • Experience with HeavyJob, Bluebeam, and P6 is a plus but we care more about your instincts than your software skills
  • A builder's mindset: you solve problems, you communicate clearly, and you don't wait for someone to tell you what to do

Real ownership you carry the budget, schedule, and margin on your own projects. Strong compensation $140K$180K base, plus project bonus. Full benefits including 401k with 4% match. Relocation available for the right person. Location based in Charlottesville, VA, with projects across Central to Western Virginia and into North Carolina.

If you're ready to build the projects that put you on the map and you want a seat where your work actually matters let's talk.
